It is that time of the week when Draft 412 summarizes the past seven days of worthy news nuggets that you may have missed. Let us catch you up here:
“Monte the Mullet” Retired
Monte “the Mullet” Pottebaum surprisingly retired from football earlier this week. An undrafted rookie fullback from Iowa was the only listed fullback on the pre-camp roster. Connor Heyward will get moved around and play some fullback.
The Penguins Promote Kessel
Amanda Kessel was promoted to special assistant to the president of hockey operations and general manager earlier this week. She had previously worked in an executive fellow role within the organization. The duties of her new role were not immediately made available.
0 RBI’s For McCutchen in July
Andrew McCutchen had 65 plate appearances in July and did not produce a single RBI. This has only been done twice in Pirates history, where a batter had at least 65 plate appearances without an RBI. Rodolfo Castro did this in May of ‘22. Before that, it had not happened since 1974.
Happy Birthday, Josh Palacios
Josh Palacios became only the 4th player this century to hit a walk off homerun on his birthday. The other 3 were Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds and Andruw Jones, not bad company to be a part of.
Trice to Miss 2023-2024 Season
Cory Trice, the 7th round draft pick out of Purdue, was turning heads and was making a case to be in some nickel packages. He was carted off the field with a significant injury this past week. Hopefully, Trice can be ready for the 2024 training camp.
