It is that time of the week when Draft 412 summarizes the past seven days of worthy news nuggets that you may have missed. Let us catch you up here:
Paul Skenes Debut
Paul Skenes, the #1 draft pick of the 2023 MLB Draft, made his debut in the Florida Complex League. He only threw one inning, throwing 11 pitches and did not give up a hit, but social media blew up with the listing of his pitch speeds, 7 of which were 100 mph or over.
Skenes will make his A Ball debut on August 15th for Low A Bradenton.
Peguero Joins Barry Bonds
Pirates' 22-year-old rookie second baseman Liover Peguero became the youngest Pirates player to collect 2 hits in an inning since Barry Bonds in 1986, when he had 2 hits in an inning as a 22-year-old rookie.
Former #1 Swaggerty to Chicago
Former #1 draft pick Travis Swaggerty was recently released by the Pirates and according to Swaggerty’s Twitter account, he has signed with the Chicago White Sox. He ended his Pirates career with just 1 hit in 9 at bats. He finished his minor league career here in Pittsburgh hitting .250 in 1,174 at bats, only hitting 27 home runs.
QMJHL Bans Fighting
The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League has officially banned fighting beginning with the upcoming season, the league announced. Here’s what you need to know:
The league’s rules state anyone engaged in a fight will be ejected from the game.
Any player “found to have instigated the fight” will get an automatic one-game suspension. The player “declared to be the aggressor during the fight” will receive a minimum two-game automatic suspension.
Players involved in multiple scuffles in a season will start receiving an automatic suspension beginning with their second fight, in addition to the other sanctions.
