The 2023 NHL Draft will be here before you know it, and Draft 412 will preview some of the prospects who will be probable first round picks. Draft 412 will go over the strengths and weaknesses of each prospect and where they should land in the NHL Draft.

Name- Calum Ritchie

Pos- C/RW

Team- Oshawa Generals

HT/WT- 6’2” 187 lbs.

Born- 1/21/2005

Home – Brampton, ON, Canada

Calum Ritchie has been all over the board during this draft process. At times, scouts have had him in the top 10 and some have him falling towards the end of round one. One thing is for certain, Ritchie has plenty of skillset to bring to the table.

As a 17-year-old, Ritchie is wearing the “A” for Oshawa, a testament to his leadership and consistent performance for the Generals. Ritchie performed at a point per game pace in 2023 with 24 goals and 35 assists in 59 games. This was an improvement over his 2021-2022 season of 45 points in 65 games.

Ritchie has above average stickhandling skills and with his speed, can beat you one-on-one regularly. He already possesses a top-tier hockey IQ to go along with his stickhandling, setting up scoring opportunities for his teammates throughout the game. He always seems to make something happen on each shift, and loves quarterbacking the offensive set up.

Wingers will love playing with Ritchie as he is always looking to pass the puck. This could be detrimental as well, passing up scoring opportunities and looking to make the perfect pass.

He has a heavy, solid wrist shot with good accuracy but needs to shoot more often to complete his offensive game. He takes pride in his defensive game and is outstanding on the penalty kill.

Final Analysis

Calum Ritchie has the top end ability to be a top six forward in the NHL. His style reminds Draft 412 of Anže Kopitar, a guy who plays a 200 foot game with offensive ability. Kopitar is his ceiling. Draft 412 can see Pavel Zacha as a possible comparison that he’s more likely to reach. A nice pick at the end of round one.

Round 1/2- # 33 on Draft 412 big board.
