The 2023 NHL Draft will be here before you know it, and Draft 412 will preview some of the prospects who will be probable first round picks. Draft 412 will go over the strengths and weaknesses of each prospect and where they should land in the NHL Draft.

Name- Etienne Morin

Pos- D

Team- Moncton (QMJHL)

HT/WT- 6’0” 180 lbs.

Born- 3/9/2005

Home – Valleyfield, Que.

If you are looking for a defenseman to shore up your back end, Etienne Morin may be the best in the draft, and he may be available in round two.

Morin led all QMJHL defensemen in scoring and goals this past season with 21 goals and 72 points in 67 games. He put up 17 points in only 12 playoff games and led all defensemen in scoring, though being knocked out in round two.

A true puck mover who is excellent in transition, Morin is a defenseman who loves the puck on his stick. He has a hard shot from the point and does a good job of getting shots through. He is a weapon on the powerplay, and if you sell out to stop his shot, he has the passing ability to beat you as well. His release and accuracy on his slapshot is outstanding, and his one-timer can take over a power play.

Morin played 21 minutes a game this past season for Moncton and played in every possible scenario. His penalty killing has improved over the past couple of years, and his work ethic shows on every shift.

Morin is a good skater, but compared to other top defensemen, he lacks high-end foot speed and tends to try and play at a slower pace. Morin also needs to get stronger to help win one-on-one battles.

There are times in the offensive zone where he becomes overly aggressive, trying to become part of the play and loses positioning to defend on possible breakouts. To draw a comparison, Morin has some Shayne Gostisbehere in him, in the way he plays in the offensive end. If Morin can improve his foot speed, he has a chance to be a solid 2nd line pairing.

Final Analysis

If your team selects Morin on day two of the draft you should be smiling like a butcher’s dog. Morin will bring defensive depth to some team and a future quarterback on their power play.

Round 2- # 40 on Draft 412 big board.
