Orioles Obtain Corbin Burnes

The Baltimore Orioles are doing their best to keep pace with the New York Yankees in the AL East. They have obtained ace starting pitcher Corbin Burnes from Milwaukee for rookie infielder Joey Ortiz, left-handed pitcher DL Hall, and their 2024 Competitive Balance Round A draft pick (#34 overall)

Burnes has been in the top-10 Cy Young balloting in each of the past four seasons and won the award in 2021 after finishing with a 2.43 ERA. The following season, Burnes led the league in strikeouts with 243 and had a 2.94 ERA across 202 innings. Since 2020, he has a 2.86 ERA over 105 games and has struck out nearly 31% of batters faced while only walking 7.1%. Opponent batters have nearly 2,500 trips to plate against Burns and are a paltry .197.

Burns is one of the top 10 pitchers in the majors and he jumps into an Orioles rotation that includes Kyle Bradish and Grayson Rodriguez. The rotation will more than likely consist of Dean Kremer, John Means and or Cole Irvin.

Burnes hits free agency next off-season and if he continues putting up the numbers, he will be cashing in a huge new contract.

Joey Ortiz, only 25, is one of the top prospects in the Orioles' organization, but was available because of Baltimore’s young depth up the middle. With Jackson Holliday and Gunnar Henderson set to be the future of the left side of the infield and Jordan Westburg slated to be the second baseman, the Orioles traded from an area of strength. Ortiz will be a nice replacement for the Brewers once shortstop Willy Adames is either traded or he leaves next off-season as a free agent.

DL Hall, also 25, is a left-handed pitcher who was a first-round pick out of high school. The only knock against Hall early on in his career is his high walk percentage. His fastball tops out at 96 and he has an above average slider and changeup as part of his repertoire. The Brewers have a lot of question marks in their rotation, and there should be ample opportunity for Hall to join the starting five. With only Freddy Peralta and Wade Miley locked in, Hall will battle against Joe Ross, Colin Rea and Aaron Ashby.

This trade makes sense for both organizations. The Brewers add two young future pieces to an aging organization and the Baltimore Orioles, coming off a 101-win season, get to add a proven starter to the top of their rotation as they continue to battle the revamped Yankees.
