The Pitt Panthers named their 2023 team captains on Friday at the team luncheon at the Westin in Pittsburgh, when the program honored long time play by play announcer Bill Hillgrove for his 50 seasons with the team. ESPN Football Analyst and former Pitt Panther Louis Riddick was the keynote speaker for the luncheon and Head Coach Pat Narduzzi made the announcements on the team captains, which were voted on by the players.

Here are the three team captains for the 2023 Pitt Panthers:

Tackle - Matt Goncalves 6’6” 325 lbs.

The redshirt senior out of Manorville, NY was selected as a Third-Team All-ACC after starting all 13 games. Goncalves has the potential to be a mid-round draft pick in 2024. He brings positional versatility to the line, starting at right tackle and left tackle throughout his Panthers career.

Defensive Line - David Green 6’1” 285 lbs.

David Green, born in West Mifflin, PA, played three seasons for Central Catholic and was named a member of the Post-Gazette Fabulous 22. The sixth-year senior is taking it upon himself to be the leader of the defensive line that has seen so much success over the past decade. Last season, Green played in all 13 games and had 22 tackles and 3.5 sacks. He has some work to do to jump up on draft boards, but don’t count out a Pitt Panther defensive lineman.

Linebacker- Shayne Simon- 6’3” 235 lbs.

Shayne Simon is a 6th year senior that played his first 4 seasons at Notre Dame before transferring to Pitt in 2022. He is a fast, playmaking linebacker who has 45 games of tape for the scouts to look at. He can play sideline to sideline and if he improves his play against the run, he can find himself into the late rounds of 2024.
