Who’s Hot Who’s Not: A look at the Pirates' system as we near mid-season

by David Finoli

Much has been said about the Pirates' system in 2020 and while there have been some disappointments, for the most part, the system has been doing a good job of developing players for the future. Here’s a look at each team so far.

INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

A lot had been made about the talent of the Indians before the season as many of the Bucs' top prospects were starting the season there. At 33-41 as of 6/28 the record was disappointing, but the

main culprit of the less than stellar mark has been a poor bullpen. Luckily, their top bullpen prospect, Carmen Mlodzinski, has been one of the pen’s most consistent performers. Here are the best and worst from the Indians at this point. Priester might have had a disjointed full season, but his performance over the past month and a half puts him in the best category.

ALTOONA CURVE

Except for Henry Davis, the .235 team average tells the story of a team that has been in an extended slump all year. There have also been some horrible pitching performances, save Jared Jones yet the Curve have battled all year and stand at 34-34.

GREENSBORO GRASSHOPPERS

Like Altoona, Greensboro has had their struggles at the plate, which hurts playing in a hitter friendly park, although their power numbers are good with 88 homers in 68 games. They’ve taken that and had some great pitching performances that have allowed them to come in at 37-31 so far this season. Considering the stadium they play in, Solometo has had an incredible season.

BRADENTON MARAUDERS

There isn't a tremendous amount of top prospects at Bradenton, but when you have a top 100 talent and 2022 number four overall pick in the draft, you have the eyes of the major league team on you. They probably have the best pitching so far in the system and have graduated a few players to Greensboro as they sit with a system best 38-30 mark.
